2026 Black Future Fest recap

Listen to an audio podcast of this program.

The first Black Future Fest was a month-long, citywide celebration of Afrofuturistic art, literature, fashion, and community creativity. The event featured murals, exhibitions, readings of Octavia E. Butler, and hands-on workshops for all ages.

This event was only possible through the support of these community partners: Iowa City Senior Center, Friends of the Senior Center, Iowa City Office of Human Rights, The Center for Afrofuturist Studies, Public Space One, Iowa City Public Library, FilmScene Iowa City, UNESCO City of Literature, Art Advisory Committee, Dream City, Iowa City Foreign Relations Council, Iowa City Africa Fest, and United Action for Youth.
