In celebration of Indigenous Peoples' Month, Native American Dawson Davenport will read excerpts from his chapter in We the Interwoven: An Anthology of Bicultural Iowa, published by the Iowa Writers' House in 2019.
A member of the Meskwaki Nation, Dawson Davenport was born into a world that was not told in the history books. He reveals many aspects of his life story in the new book, We the Interwoven, explaining that he wrote these stories "with the hope of helping people, especially young Native people, who may be struggling in life." He hopes he can "uplift and inspire that Native kid who might feel like his life is worthless because he made a bad choice." Davenport describes his journey towards manhood and the difficulties he encountered with alcoholism, incarceration, and cultural differences as he was growing up, while reminding us of the importance of family and heritage.
Biographical note: Davenport, a member of the Thunder clan of the Meskwaki Nation, is a recent graduate of the University of Iowa, majoring in art and getting a certificate in entrepreneurial management. A proud father, he currently resides at the Meskwaki Settlement where he was elected to serve a term on the Tribal Council.
