Inclusive Teaching Awards 2019
Listen to an audio podcast of this program.
To commemorate the 65th anniversary of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education, the Iowa City Office of Equity and Human Rights presented the Inclusive Teaching Awards. Students at each area high school were asked to nominate teachers whom they felt embodied inclusive teaching characteristics.
In the Brown case, the Supreme Court overturned the "separate but equal" justification for racial segregation in public facilities that had been in place since 1896. Local high school teachers are recognized for expanding upon the legacy of Brown by truly recognizing the worth of every child in their classes.
Award recipients included:
- Travis Henderson, West High School
- Tony Balcaen, City High School
- Lisa Petrie, Elizabeth Tate High School
- John Demory, Regina Catholic Education Center
The event was made possible by the generous support of the University of Iowa College of Education, the UI College of Law and UI Student Legal Services, and the UI Center for Human Rights, University of Iowa Community Credit Union (now Green State Credit Union), and the UNESCO City of Literature.
