EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS DISPATCHER

Wage Range: $17.63-$22.64
One permanent, 3⁄4 time position available
30 hrs per week, includes rotating shifts and days off, will include weekends and holidays
Under general direction, monitors the City’s radio/alarms and information from the National Crime Information System. Monitors alarm systems at City Hall, elevator alarms, tower site alarms and contacts appropriate parties. Obtains, sends, monitors and follows the progression of information regarding licenses, registrations, records checks, warrant entries, wanted/missing persons, stolen vehicles/articles, criminal histories, amber alerts, administrative messages, and other law enforcement information. Receives, records, and disseminates emergency and non-emergency calls for service from the public in person, on routine phone lines and 911 lines. Provides information in accordance with prescribed policies and regulations and obtains information regarding calls for service. Dispatches information to police, fire and ambulance personnel via two-way radio. Communicates with callers and provides emergency medical dispatch with specific instructions to callers. Contacts appropriate parties such as power companies, business owners, road crews, etc to respond to scenes. Enters information on the computer aided dispatch system including incidents, tows, stolen vehicles/articles, wanted/missing persons, and tickets. Generates various reports. Enters information on arrest dockets, tow entries and house watches into computer system. Creates incident reports for calls for service. Operates and maintains a City-wide paging system. Trains new employees. Releases paper work/tow slips to owners of vehicles and accepts money as payments for parking fines. Sends certified letters for impounded vehicles. Maintains impound records. Takes reports from the public and provides information to callers. Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Minimum education, experience and certification
High school degree or equivalent required. One year general office and public contact experience involving the use of current computer equipment required. Emergency medical dispatch certification, National Crime Information Center certification, cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification, BIST certification and automated external defibrillator certification are required within six months of hire. Notary Public is required within twelve months of hire. Must pass background check. Must live within 20 miles of the Iowa City City Hall within one year of hire. One year of college or technical school from a DOE recognized accredited school and one year of experience in the areas of emergency
communications involving use of emergency radios and telephones are preferred.

The selection process will consist of an interview and background check. It is anticipated that the position will be filled by the middle of August. Candidates not selected may reapply when another position becomes available (CALEA Standard 32.1.4).
